The diabetes drug Actos has been linked to bladder cancer and lawsuits are being filed. All federal actos bladder cancer lawsuits have been consolidated in the Western District of Louisiana. Rudolph F.X. Migliore, P.C. has legal help available for victims of Actos.

Actos (Pioglitazone) is a drug used for patients who have type 2 diabetes to aid in controlling the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood stream. In 2010, more than 2 million patients were taking Actos with no warning of its risk of causing cancer. In one study involving 193,000 patients taking Actos for an average of 2 years, their risk of bladder cancer increased 40% compared to if they had never been exposed to the drug.

Multi District Litigation (MDL), allows that all preliminary parts and discoveries relating to the case will be held in one court. This provides the court with all necessary information for background of all of the lawsuits being filed. Pretrial proceedings were assigned to the Honorable Rebecca F. Doherty of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. This court will handle all pretrial issues regarding Actos bladder cancer litigation in federal court. The Actos litigation case is known as “In Re:Actos (Pioglitazone) Products Liability Litigation Case No 6:11-md- 2299“.

In December 2011, 11 civil actions were transferred by the United States Judicial Panel on Multi District Litigation. This came after plaintiffs filed a motion to transfer 11 pending actions, and all Actos injury actions filed in federal court to a single judge for pretrial proceedings against the manufacturers of Actos, Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Inc., in August 2011. More than 100 cases will be transferred to the Western District of Louisiana and this number is expected to increase significantly secondary to the link between Actos usage and development of bladder cancer.

According to Plaintiffs, those who use Actos allegedly have an increased risk for developing bladder cancer. Plaintiffs also allege that the defendants (Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Inc.) concealed their knowledge of the risks involved in taking Actos, and failed to include necessary warnings to educate consumers and the health care community of the drugs’ potential risks.

The initial status conference was originally scheduled for the first week in February 2012, but did not go as planned due to multiple cases pending before the MDL Panel for transfer. At this time, the first general status conference will likely be held on March 22, 2012

Startling new information was recently reported by the New England Journal of
Medicine. The Journal studied emergency room visits due to adverse drug events
in older Americans. Mainly, what drugs were causing those 65 years old and older
to make Emergency Room visits and become hospitalized. What they found was that
most of these hospitalizations came from common, heavily-prescribed medications.
These medications can be broken down into 4 categories: anti-platelet, blood
thinners, insulin lowering and blood sugar lowering medications. These
categories include popular drugs like Warfarin, Plavix and Actos. Both the insulin and blood
lowering medications are typically prescribed for diabetics, indicating that
diabetics are susceptible to adverse drug reactions. The study looked at close
to 100,000 emergency hospitalizations that the researchers thought were largely
preventable.

The researchers said that seniors and doctors need to be
especially vigilant when prescribing medications chronically, to ensure that
they are effective. Doctors should monitor the patients and make adjustments as
necessary to the dosage amounts. See the New England
Journal of Medicine’s report.

Actos is used to regulate insulin levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. This study indicated that Actos is a
contributor to emergency room visits caused by adverse drug events. Actos has a
long history of side effects, first being linked to an increased risk of heart
attacks, and more recently to an increased risk of bladder cancer.

bladder cancer. With over three decades of experience, the firm is

The pharmaceutical manufacturer, Takeda, is set to receive a decision from the Food and Drug Administration on January [...]

The pharmaceutical manufacturer, Takeda, is set to receive a decision from the Food and Drug Administration on January 25, 2011 regarding a new drug for diabetes therapy which combines alogliptin and Actos into a single tablet. In July 2011, Takeda re-filed an application to have the drug approved by the FDA and eventually have the drug made available to the public. The new data submitted to the FDA includes information about a cardiovascular outcomes trial. The new drug would be the first in the United States to have both a thiazolidinedione and a DPP-4 inhibitor in a single pill. Currently, Aloglitin is sold in other countries and has been approved by some regulators overseas.

However, the possible increased risk of bladder cancer from taking Actos for a year or more cannot be overlooked. In August 2011, the Food and Drug Administration approved updated labeling for Actos, a type 2 diabetes drug intended to regulate insulin and blood sugar levels in patients. The updated labeling indicates that the use of pioglitazone (Actos) for more than one year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. Lawsuits from patients across the United States have been filed against Takeda Pharmaceuticals, alleging that their use of Actos caused them to develop bladder cancer.

As a number of lawsuits are pending and more are being filed, Takeda is continuing to press ahead and seek approval of another drug containing Pioglitazone. In 2010, more than 2 million patients were taking Actos. In one study done on the drug that evaluated 193,000 patients who were taking Actos for an average of 2 years, it was determined that their risk of bladder cancer increased 40% compared to if they had never been exposed to the drug. Studies concerning the bladder cancer risk are still ongoing

The law firm of Rudolph F.X. Migliore, P.C. is currently accepting cases involving Actos and bladder cancer. If you or a loved one has developed bladder cancer after taking Actos, you may be entitled to compensation for the harm Actos has caused.

With over three decades of experience, the Law Firm of Rudolph F.X. Migliore, P.C. is well positioned to help those who have suffered because of the dangerous diabetes drug Actos.
The diabetes drug Actos may be linked to Bladder Cancer. While the FDA’s highest warning appears on Actos [...]

The diabetes drug Actos may be linked to Bladder Cancer. While the FDA’s highest warning appears on Actos for its heart attack risk, no such warning appears for Bladder Cancer. Research has shown that taking Actos for more than 1 year may increase a patient’s chance for developing Bladder Cancer by up to 40%. With over 2 million people prescribed Actos, the law firm of Rudolph F.X. Migliore, P.C. has seen a number of inquiries related to Actos litigation. Actos is used to regulate the level of glucose in the bloodstream in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is a prevalent disease in the United States and Actos use has steadily increased, especially after a similar prescription drug, Avandia, was pulled off the market because it was linked to an increased risk for heart attacks. The relationship of Actos to bladder cancer has only recently been examined and consequences are being monitored by the FDA. In August 2011, the FDA approved updated labeling for Actos stating that taking the drug “for more than one year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer”. The FDA has been conducting an ongoing review of the connection between Actos (pioglitazone) and Bladder Cancer based on studies conducted over the last 10 years by the drugs’ manufacturers, as well as studies done in Europe which suggested an increased risk from using Actos (pioglitazone) and developing Bladder Cancer.

As this potential link has become more prevalent, the law firm of Rudolph F.X. Migliore, P.C. has been hearing from patients that have been taking Actos for an extended period of time and have developed bladder cancer. The firm initially started investigating case related to Actos and Bladder Cancer from throughout the United States in July 2011 and is continuing to accept cases.

With over three decades of experience, the law firm of Rudolph F.X. Migliore, P.C. is well positioned to help victims of Actos related Bladder Cancer. The firm works with nationally recognized co-council to provide powerful representation for their clients, while providing them with personalized service.
In recent years, diabetics have struggled to find medication to regulate insulin levels. Two of the most prominent [...]

In recent years, diabetics have struggled to find medication to regulate insulin levels. Two of the most prominent of diabetes drugs are Avandia and Actos. Actos may be sold under the generic name Pioglitazone and Avandia under the name Rosiglitazone. The drugs may also be combined and sold in various combinations and variations including, Avandamet, Avandaryl, Actos plus Met, Actos plus Met XR and Duetact.

Beginning November 2007, the FDA required that Avandia carry the FDA’s highest level warning on its container. On-going studies and trials have shown an association between the Avandia use and heart failure and heart-related risks. While Avandia remained on the market, many diabetics were increasingly concerned about exposure to the drug. In September 2010, the Food and Drug Administration implemented strict controls to restrict access to the medication, allowing use of the drug only for Type 2 diabetics who are unable to control their diabetes on other medication. Diabetics using Avandia or its generic equivalent were advised to discuss these risks with their doctors.
Risks associated with Avandia are not unique. The FDA also required a black box warning on Actos in 2007, alerting patients that the drug may cause or exacerbate heart failure.

Thus, patients with diabetes are forced to between medicine and its risks, or the consequences of not taking the medication. As the warnings on Avandia became more restrictive, Actos usage in diabetics steadily increased. The use of Actos is now much more common than ever before.

In 2010, users of Actos had another side effect of serious concern. The FDA announced that it was reviewing data concerning long term Actos use and an increased risk for developing bladder cancer. Some studies showed as much as a 40% increased risk of bladder cancer among Actos users who had been on the medication for a year or more. Studies in European countries found similar results, prompting regulators in Germany and France to order doctors to stop prescribing Actos.

Lawsuits are now being filed on behalf of Actos users who have been diagnosed with bladder cancer. It is important that Actos victims consult an attorney who can protect their legal rights and fight to recover damages for the harm they suffered.
The law firm of Rudolph F.X. Migliore, P.C. is now accepting cases of individuals who have been taking Actos and have developed bladder cancer. More than three decades of legal experience and collaboration with nationally recognized co-counsel give us the expertise to reach major verdicts for clients.
